We study the ensemble containing all possible codes (i.i.d. ensemble). Each codeword has length n and protects on average R bits of information with each channel use. We show that the vast majority of codes have a probability of error which, at low rates, decreases exponentially fast and with an exponent that is larger than the so-called random coding exponent (exponent of the average error probability in the ensemble). We also show that, at rates close to the capacity of the channel, most codes have about the same exponent, i.e., the distribution of their exponents shows concentration.

Our paper “On the Error Exponent Distribution of Code Ensembles over Classical-Quantum Channels” has been just presented at the IEEE Information Theory Workshop (ITW), held in Sydney, Australia from Sep. 29 to Oct. 3 2025.
